BOSTON -- A Danish energy firm planning offshore wind development in federal waters south of Martha's Vineyard has chosen to locate its North American headquarters in Boston.

DONG Energy on Thursday announced the opening of its new office space at One International Place -- a Financial District skyscraper that gained LEED Silver certification for its sustainability and energy efficiency.

The Boston office initially will employ about 20 people.

DONG in December announced it would develop Bay State Wind in partnership with Eversource. The wind farm has a potential capacity of 2,000 megawatts -- enough to power a million homes.

The company has leased 186,000 acres in an area of the Atlantic Ocean that has been dubbed "the Saudi Arabia of offshore wind."

The firm hopes to secure utility contracts later this year, according to a press statement.

"With 21 successful utility-scale projects around the globe, we look forward to bringing our expertise to Massachusetts to help the Commonwealth become the nation's leader in offshore wind," said Thomas Brostrom, DONG's North American manager.
